John Paul Stevens
As a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding service of John Paul Stevens, retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

Governor Walz Orders Flags Flown at Half-Staff in Honor of Former Justice John Paul Stevens
ST. PAUL, MN – In accordance with a proclamation issued by the President, Governor Tim Walz has directed all flags at state buildings in Minnesota be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Tuesday, July 23 to honor former Justice John Paul Stevens on the day of interment.
“Justice Stevens was a brilliant legal mind and dedicated his life to public service, having served on the Supreme Court for nearly four decades,” reads the proclamation from Governor Walz. “In concurrence with the President’s order and in remembrance of Justice Stevens and his many contributions as a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, it has been ordered that the American and Minnesota flags at state buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff on July 23.”
Governor Walz proclamation reads as follows:
WHEREAS: Justice John Paul Stevens was nominated to the United States Supreme Court in 1975 and served until June 29, 2010; and
WHEREAS: Justice Stevens was a brilliant legal mind and dedicated his life to public service, having served on the Supreme Court for nearly four decades; and
WHEREAS: Justice Stevens was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Gerald Ford. He became the senior Associate Justice in 1994, and during his tenure, Justice Stevens presided over issues of American law including civil liberties, government action, and intellectual property; and
WHEREAS: In addition to his service on the Supreme Court, Justice Stevens was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He served as an intelligence officer from 1942 to 1945, and was awarded a Bronze Star for his military service; and
WHEREAS: With the passing of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stevens, President Trump has ordered American flags at all government buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff on July 23 as a mark of respect for the memory of Justice Stevens and to honor his service to our country; and
WHEREAS: In concurrence with the President’s order and in remembrance of Justice Stevens and his many contributions as a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, it has been ordered that the American and Minnesota flags at state buildings and facilities also be flown at half-staff on July 23.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM WALZ, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim order all United States flags and Minnesota flags be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota beginning sunrise until sunset, on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 in memory of Justice Stevens.
