President Donald Trump and Governor Dayton Orders Flags Flown at Half-Staff in Honor of the Victims of the Attack in Parkland, Florida

ST. PAUL, MN – In accordance with a proclamation issued by President Donald Trump, Governor Mark Dayton has directed all United States flags and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota. As directed by the President’s proclamation, flags will be flown at half-staff beginning immediately, until sunset on Monday, February 19, 2018, as a mark of respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence in Parkland, Florida.

“Yesterday’s terrible massacre of schoolchildren in Florida should shock and horrify all Minnesotans,” said Governor Dayton. “I urge all of us to demand, and then work for, an end to this insane violence.”

On Wednesday, February 14, 2018, a reprehensible attack on innocent students and faculty occurred at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and the victims and their families deserve our honor, respect, and remembrance.

The proclamation from the President reads as follows:

Our Nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones in the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated on February 14, 2018, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, February 19, 2018. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

The proclamation from the Governor reads as follows:

WHEREAS: On Wednesday, February 14, 2018, a terrible act of violence was committed against innocent people at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida; and

WHEREAS: The victims and their families deserve our honor, respect, and remembrance; and

WHEREAS: The President of the United States of America has lowered United States flags at all public buildings, grounds, and military posts of the Federal Government until sunset on Monday, February 19, 2018.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARK DAYTON, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby order all United States flags and Minnesota flags be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota immediately through sunset on Monday, February 19, 2018, in memory of the victims of this tragedy.
